I'm the first woman in my bloodline to say "this isn't enough for me" out loud, and actually do something about it.

My mother had that same chance. She just never took it. She was 19 when she met my father, 21 when she married him, and not much older when she had me and my brother and settled into being home with us. She carried a lot she never got help with, and the depression was there for most of my growing up, and so was the drinking. That's what people do when they've stopped believing a life can change.

She died of cancer on the 19th of February 2001, at 51 years old, and I was on my knees in front of the couch when she took her last breath. Twenty-five years ago this past February, and I still can't write a few sentences about it without my throat closing up.

Hardly any of that grief has ever been about me. We were estranged for her last years and found our way back to peace in her final months, and I'll always be grateful for that. What I carry is the sadness for her, because she never got to make anything of her life. And I know a good part of that was her own doing, so I hold both truths at once, the sadness and the honesty.

I'm 52 now, older than she ever got to be, building a business and a life that finally feels like mine, and I feel like I'm only just getting started. 🩵

Some thoughts refuse to arrive while I’m sitting quietly, trying to think my way into an answer. 🫣

Mine show up while I’m talking.
